In a world where alliances are often shaped by changing political and economic circumstances, some partnerships transcend short term interests.
The relationship between Pakistan and Türkiye is one such partnership.
Built upon decades of friendship, shared values, mutual respect, and strong people to people connections, the relationship between the two nations has consistently demonstrated resilience. But today, that relationship is entering a new phase.
A phase where friendship is increasingly being translated into trade, investment, industrial cooperation, and strategic economic partnerships.
On 9 July 2025, Türkiye’s Foreign Minister H.E. Hakan Fidan met with Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister H.E. Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar in Islamabad to discuss an ambitious economic vision that included expanding bilateral trade toward US$5 billion and establishing a Special Economic Zone in Karachi designed to attract Turkish investors and businesses.
This represents an important step in transforming the historic relationship between Pakistan and Türkiye into a stronger economic partnership.
From Sentiment to Structure
The cultural and historical affinity between Pakistan and Türkiye has long been celebrated.
However, the future of bilateral relations cannot be built on sentiment alone.
Strong friendships between nations become truly transformative when they create opportunities for businesses, investors, workers, entrepreneurs, and future generations.
The proposed Türkiye focused Special Economic Zone in Karachi has the potential to become an important component of this transformation.
It represents more than an industrial location.
It can become a platform for:
Greater Turkish investment in Pakistan
Joint industrial development
Technology and knowledge transfer
Business mobility and market access
Innovation and entrepreneurship
Long term institutional cooperation
In that sense, the SEZ can become a corridor of commitment between the two countries.
The $5 Billion Trade Ambition
The ambition to increase bilateral trade toward US$5 billion represents an important economic objective.
Achieving such a target will require more than government commitments. It will require sustained engagement from the private sector, stronger institutional coordination, increased investment, and greater awareness of opportunities in both markets.
The potential benefits are significant.
Increased Foreign Direct Investment
Greater Turkish participation in Pakistan could bring new capital into manufacturing, infrastructure, technology, energy, real estate, logistics, and other strategic sectors.
Employment and SME Development
New investments and joint ventures can create employment opportunities while strengthening Pakistan’s small and medium sized enterprise ecosystem.
Technology and Industrial Cooperation
Collaboration between Pakistani and Turkish companies can facilitate technology transfer, technical expertise, modern production systems, and new industrial capabilities.
Areas such as textiles, engineering, construction, technology, halal industries, and other manufacturing sectors can provide opportunities for deeper cooperation.
Logistics and Regional Connectivity
Karachi’s position as Pakistan’s major commercial and maritime gateway creates opportunities to strengthen logistics and supply chain connections.
Combined with Pakistan’s broader connectivity through Gwadar and Türkiye’s strategic position between Europe and Asia, greater cooperation could contribute to wider regional trade corridors.
Why the Karachi SEZ Matters
A dedicated economic zone for Turkish investors could provide an institutional framework through which businesses can enter Pakistan with greater clarity and confidence.
Such a platform could help connect Turkish manufacturers and investors with Pakistani partners, suppliers, entrepreneurs, and consumers.
The objective should not simply be to attract companies into a geographical zone.
The greater opportunity is to create an ecosystem.
An ecosystem where Turkish and Pakistani businesses can establish joint ventures, develop new products, access regional markets, train skilled workers, and build businesses capable of competing internationally.
If developed with the right institutional framework, infrastructure, incentives, and private sector participation, the SEZ could become a model for bilateral economic cooperation.
PTIDC’s Role in the New Era
As Founder & President of the Pakistan Türkiye Investment & Development Council (PTIDC), I welcome this important development.
PTIDC was established with a clear purpose: to strengthen economic relations between Pakistan and Türkiye and help transform bilateral goodwill into meaningful economic cooperation.
Our role is to help create bridges between investors, institutions, businesses, government stakeholders, and chambers of commerce.
We see several areas where PTIDC can contribute to this emerging economic chapter.
These include:
Facilitating investor onboarding
Promoting strategic joint ventures
Connecting businesses with relevant institutions
Supporting dialogue with ministries, chambers, and municipalities
Promoting investment opportunities internationally
Strengthening investor confidence
Encouraging private sector participation
The objective is simple.
To make it easier for the right people and institutions to find one another and turn shared ambitions into practical projects.
From Economic Diplomacy to Economic Action
Economic diplomacy becomes meaningful when it produces measurable outcomes.
A meeting should lead to a partnership.
A partnership should lead to investment.
Investment should create businesses and employment.
And successful businesses should strengthen the relationship between nations.
This is the economic cycle that Pakistan and Türkiye have the opportunity to build.
The relationship between our two countries already possesses something extremely valuable: trust.
Now we must convert that trust into trust capital.
Trust capital can attract investment.
Investment can create industrial capacity.
Industrial capacity can create employment and exports.
And exports can strengthen the economic foundations of both countries.
A New Generation of Builders
This moment belongs not only to governments.
It belongs to entrepreneurs.
It belongs to industrialists.
It belongs to investors.
It belongs to young business leaders who are prepared to think beyond traditional markets and build partnerships across borders.
Pakistan offers a large domestic market, a strategic geographic position, a young population, and significant industrial potential.
Türkiye offers a sophisticated manufacturing ecosystem, strong infrastructure, access to European and regional markets, and extensive international business experience.
Together, these strengths can create opportunities far beyond bilateral trade.
They can contribute to a broader economic corridor connecting South Asia, Türkiye, Europe, the Gulf, and Central Asia.
The Road Ahead
The US$5 billion trade ambition should not be viewed simply as a number.
It should be viewed as a destination.
Reaching that destination will require consistent policy, institutional coordination, private sector leadership, investment facilitation, and a willingness to pursue long term partnerships.
The proposed Karachi SEZ can become one of the mechanisms through which this ambition is pursued.
But its success will ultimately depend on execution.
The opportunity is significant.
The foundation already exists.
The friendship is strong.
Now the task is to build.
A Call to Builders, Not Bystanders
History provides countries with moments of opportunity.
The most successful nations are those that recognize these moments and act upon them.
For Pakistan and Türkiye, this is one of those moments.
Let us move beyond symbolic friendship and build an economic relationship defined by trade, investment, technology, industrial cooperation, and shared prosperity.
Let us create partnerships that benefit businesses today while opening doors for generations tomorrow.
And let us ensure that the next chapter of Pakistan Türkiye relations is remembered not only for the strength of its friendship, but for the prosperity that friendship created.
🇵🇰🤝🇹🇷
Brothers in faith. Partners in progress. Builders of a shared future.
