There are moments in life when you realize that you are not simply meeting a person—you are meeting history itself.
Recently, I had the distinct honor of spending time with Air Marshal (Retd.) Sharbat Ali Changezi, one of Pakistan’s distinguished military leaders, decorated fighter pilots, and a man whose life has been defined by service, sacrifice, leadership, and an unwavering commitment to Pakistan.
For many of us, stories of courage are found in history books. For Air Marshal Changezi, courage was something he lived in the skies.
A Life Dedicated to Service
As a young officer of the Pakistan Air Force, Air Marshal Changezi belonged to a generation that stood at the forefront of some of the most defining periods in Pakistan’s history.
Over the course of his distinguished career, he witnessed and contributed to the evolution of the Pakistan Air Force from its formative years into a highly professional and respected air force.
His decades of service, leadership, and dedication ultimately saw him rise to the rank of Air Marshal—a distinction achieved by only a select few.
Yet, beyond the rank and accomplishments lies something even more valuable: character.
Throughout his career, he embodied values that define true nation-builders:
- Duty before self
- Discipline in the face of adversity
- Service without expectation
- Leadership through action
- Love for Pakistan above all else
A Masterclass in Leadership
During our conversations in Istanbul, Air Marshal Changezi shared stories, experiences, and lessons accumulated over a lifetime of service.
Listening to him, I was reminded that leadership is not ultimately measured by titles, wealth, or influence.
It is measured by the lives we touch, the values we uphold, and the legacy we leave behind.
His journey offered a powerful reminder that true leadership does not demand recognition. It earns respect through consistency, sacrifice, and service.
Lessons That Transcend Generations
As someone who has spent nearly two decades building businesses, facilitating investments, and working to strengthen Pakistan–Türkiye relations through economic diplomacy, I found myself reflecting deeply on his journey.
Our conversation reinforced several lessons that are relevant not only to military leadership but to business, diplomacy, entrepreneurship, and life itself.
Great Nations Are Built Over Generations
National progress does not happen overnight.
Strong institutions, prosperous economies, and resilient societies are built through the contributions of generations. The responsibility of each generation is not only to benefit from what came before, but also to leave something stronger for those who follow.
Success Without Service Has Little Meaning
Achievement becomes far more meaningful when it creates value beyond oneself.
Whether through public service, business, mentorship, or community development, our accomplishments should ultimately contribute to something larger than personal success.
Character Is the Greatest Form of Wealth
Positions can change. Wealth can come and go. Recognition can fade.
Character, however, remains.
The way a person conducts themselves when nobody is watching often tells us more about their leadership than any title ever could.
Humility Should Accompany Achievement
Meeting someone who has accomplished so much yet continues to carry himself with humility is a lesson in itself.
The greater the achievement, the greater the responsibility to remain grounded.
Legacy Is Earned Through Sacrifice
A lasting legacy is rarely built through comfort.
It is built through difficult decisions, perseverance, responsibility, and a willingness to sacrifice personal interests for a greater purpose.
Bridging Generations
At a time when the world is changing at an extraordinary pace, Pakistan needs people who can bridge generations.
We need to learn from the wisdom and experiences of those who came before us while simultaneously creating opportunities for our youth.
Our elders carry lessons that cannot always be found in books. Our younger generation carries the energy, innovation, and ambition needed to shape the future.
The real opportunity lies in bringing these two strengths together.
Beyond Diplomacy and Investment
As Founder & President of the Pakistan–Türkiye Investment & Development Council (PTIDC), much of my work revolves around diplomacy, investment, economic cooperation, and international partnerships.
However, meetings like this serve as an important reminder:
Before we build institutions, we must first build character.
Economic development requires capital and strategy. International relations require diplomacy and vision. Institutions require systems and leadership.
But sustainable progress ultimately requires people with integrity, courage, and a genuine sense of responsibility toward their nation.
A Living Legacy
Air Marshal (Retd.) Sharbat Ali Changezi represents a generation that understood service as a responsibility rather than a privilege.
His story is a reminder that the true measure of a life is not simply what we achieve, but what we stand for and what we leave behind.
To me, he is more than a distinguished veteran and former senior military leader.
He is a living example of honor, service, resilience, humility, and patriotism.
And perhaps that is the greatest lesson of all: we should not only celebrate the achievements of those who built our nation—we should listen to them, learn from them, and carry their values forward.
A nation that honors its heroes secures its future.
